The vessel was hand-made, it has a burnished, smooth surface, and belongs to an A-group pottery, which developed in Nubia in time corresponding to the Predynastic and Early Dynastic Period (1st and 2nd Dynasty, ca. 3200-2780 BC) according to Egyptian chronology. It is derived from the Neolithic tradition of Nubia and the Egyptian Naqada culture. During this period there was a strong influence of the culture of Predynastic Egypt on the Lower Nubian area. The dead were buried in tumuli graves (a type of mound-shaped burial) with rich grave goods including a variety of carefully manufactured pottery.
